Planning for Community Center Initiated
Enthusiastic supporters of a Langdon Community Center met with the Langdon Selectboard on March 28, 2011 with a proposal to form working committee to develop a multi-use community center in the Municipal Building. The proposal was an outgrowth of a March 8, 2011 town meeting resolution approving the formation of such a committee.
The proposal that was hammered out by representatives of the Langdon Community Club outlined the potential users of a community center. Target audiences included children and adult groups and organizations and various groups with a specific focus such as flu shot clinics, yoga, exercise, or dance groups, blood drives, class or family reunions. The need for a site that could be used as temporary shelter for those affected by disaster such as fire or flood or those who suffer from long-term power outages was also included in the proposal. Suggestions for town-wide gatherings and activities sponsored by the town or local organizations was also mentioned in conjunction with development of a community center.
With the formation of a nine-person committee, members will address such issues as site requirements, space evaluation, establishing priorities for the rehabilitation process, setting phases for the development activity, research into grant possibilities, and financing the development of the site.
The hope of community center supporters is that members of the community who can offer skills and expertise in design, the building trades, and interior design and planning will work with the committee to provide a sorely-needed area for residents of Langdon to come together.
